Live cover of “Creep”

Can you imagine Prince tearing through a Radiohead cover in the middle of the desert? That’s exactly what happened at Coachella in 2008, and the backstage story is almost as legendary as the performance itself. During his set, Prince launched into an 8-minute version of “Creep,” complete with a wildly unhinged guitar solo. Naturally, festivalgoers filmed it and uploaded it to YouTube the next day. But Prince did not take copyright lightly. His legal team moved fast and scrubbed every trace of the video from the internet. For a while, the cover became the stuff of urban legend: those who were there remembered it, everyone else could only imagine. Then the blackout reached Thom Yorke, Radiohead’s frontman. His reaction was brilliant. He simply asked his label to sort it out, saying publicly: “Hang on, that’s our song — tell him to let people hear it.” Faced with the original creators of the track, Prince had no choice but to let it go. Thanks to Radiohead’s little intervention, the video went back online and this astonishing piece of footage was saved from oblivion. The kind of minor legal absurdity that ends up shaping music history.
