The Holy Mountain is a psychedelic mass against anything that peddles the sacred. Funded after the underground cult of El Topo, Alejandro Jodorowsky’s film follows a Christ-like thief, an Alchemist and a pack of powerful men obsessed with immortality. Behind the rituals, painted bodies, animals, gold and acid visions, the film mainly attacks religion-as-spectacle, money, power and our very human need to believe a revelation will save us. In the end Jodorowsky even breaks the cinema’s own illusion. The Holy Mountain may have been no more than a set. Very rude. Very freeing.
