Delta of Venus

Anaïs Nin

France

Littérature

In the 1940s, Anaïs Nin took a commission that hardly smelled of high literature: to write erotic pieces for a private collector, paid by the page. The client wanted sex—little psychology, and even less poetry. A clear brief, and therefore already a little sad. Nin could have supplied obedient machinery. She did the opposite. She kept the images, the disquiet, the women who desire, the power plays, the money, the masks, the rooms where everyone performs. She turned a private commission into a laboratory of desire. The best part is the ending. Delta of Venus appeared after her death, in 1977, and became one of her most famous books. What was meant to be a man’s purchased pleasure ended up a public classic of literary eroticism. A small lesson for those still waiting for permission: sometimes, it’s by refusing to obey perfectly that you truly sign your name.
