Architecture

In Rome, Villa Lontana has opened Bar Far—a proper bar tucked into its new Trastevere space. You can stroll in, order a drink, sit down, talk for too long, and then realise the table, walls, candles and arches are all part of the artwork. Handy, when your aperitivo could use a mild metaphysical crisis. Clementine Keith-Roach and Christopher Page conceived the place as an inhabitable installation. She carves fragments of bodies—hands, arms, legs—that turn into furniture, candleholders or insistently present sculptural guests. He paints trompe-l’œil openings and impossible depths, red portals that suggest another Rome hidden behind the wall. The result feels like a bar, a ruin, a strange chapel and a baroque set that got tipsy before you arrived. Bar Far recalls the old artists’ cafés—the kind of place where people drank, argued, remade the world and sometimes invented a movement between two glasses. Only here the work doesn’t hang politely on a wall. It becomes the whole room. You don’t just look at the installation, you rest your drink in it. A perfectly decent way to visit Rome without pretending to understand every ruin.
