Nobody really knows her yet — and that’s precisely why you should be watching Ann Vendi now. A Ukrainian artist based in Berlin, she manufactures images where fashion stops posing politely: bodies turn into shapes, garments become patterns, colours consume the set. You can’t quite tell whether you’re looking at a photograph, a painting, a collage or a very well-dressed visual hallucination. Before Dries Van Noten, Ann Vendi co-created I’mRoi with Maria Roi, a 158-page magazine hand-crafted over more than a year. Twelve characters, identities to try on, worlds to assemble: not the Pinterest-moodboard shoot with cold coffee. Rather a patient, almost artisanal visual obsession, where fashion has already become a private theatre. Then Dries Van Noten entrusted her with his SS26 images. Instead of taming her vision, the campaign preserved its strangeness: spirals, polka dots, pop colour planes, mirage-bodies, silhouettes dissolving into their surroundings. The product is there, obviously. But it’s badly behaved. It rejects the white backdrop, the neat pose, the product sheet. And honestly, in a moment when so many fashion images look like catalogues on tranquillisers, seeing someone put a little hypnosis back in the shop window is very welcome.
